Confusion Over 31st July Second Payment on Account Deferral

There has been some confusion on whether or not HMRC has agreed that there can be a blanket 31st July second payment on account deferral to 31st January 2021 for all self-assessment taxpayers, irrespective of whether or not they have been economically affected by the Coronavirus pandemic. This has been made worse by the fact that HMRC have been sending out numerous self-assessment statements in June showing the deferment until 31st  January 2021 unless the taxpayer wanted to pay now in the usual way.  Basically, if you can afford to pay it now you should do so in order to avoid a potential interest and penalty charge. How hard the Revenue will pursue this matter is open to doubt. For further information see the link here  for the HMRC update.
